Today's Random Thoughts

-The next part of the series on what we should learn from Promise Academy should be out tomorrow night. I was out of town at a workshop most of the week and haven't had a chance to finish it yet.

-Why is there an inverse correlation between the price of a hotel room and the availability of internet? All of the budget and mid-priced hotels offer free wireless, but all of the nicer hotels charge at least $10/day.

-I'm still in shock about the fact that a number of high schools in the South still have separate proms for Black and White students (read about it here). The proms are paid for privately, but still. One White student admits that it's "awkward," but says that “It’s how it’s always been. It’s just a tradition.” Two which a Black student responds: “You’re 18 years old! You’re old enough to smoke, drive, do whatever else you want to. Why aren’t you able to step up and say, ‘I want to have my senior prom with the people I’m graduating with?’ ”

About the internet in hotels... My hypothesis is that the expensive hotels cater mainly to business travelers who just put the $10 charge on their expense accounts and don't think much about it.

Right, it's price discrimination.

Agreed. I often prefer the Hampton Inn the the Hilton. Non-profits can't afford to get soaked.

When are you coming back, Corey? I (and your other readers, I'm sure) have missed your commentary. I'm a new teacher from Texas -- about to start teaching middle school language arts for school year 2009-10. I've found it so helpful to hear the way you process current thinking about ed policy. Write soon if you can!

When I was in school, I had a bad case of perfectionism: couldn't get things done unless they were perfect. Which really cut down on my productivity.

In college (a highly selective one, actually), my daughter picked up a different idea: sometimes, you have to say, "done is better than good."

I have over the past months enjoyed reading your thoughts here at this site. I am have thoroughly disappointed in the recent past by hoping there was a new entry to find the same entry staring at me. Wondering if you are taking a hiatus or just a blogcation. Hope to hear from you soon.

Wow, can't believe it's been over a month since my last post. I've been doing a lot of traveling and swim coaching, but I should be back soon.

I think in general more expensive hotels charge more for little things.
